Question:

Assalamualikum. Please calrify whether Islam permits adorning of male infants with Gold ornaments .If so upto what age limit it is permitted.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds.  I testify that there is none worthy or worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them differed in opinion about the ruling on adorning a boy with gold.  The view of the majority of scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them is that it is forbidden to adorn boys with gold, their evidence is that we are ordered to protect them from forbidden matters.

For instance, we are ordered to prevent them from consuming intoxicants, because Allaah forbade consuming it and forbade serving it for others to consume.  Similarly, since gold is forbidden for men, it is also forbidden for young boys, as the general evidence includes the boys as well.  The religious texts prohibit gold for males and thus boys are also addressed by these texts.  This is the most preponderant opinion.

Allaah Knows best.
