All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
The scholars stated that the donor (of meat and the like) should not eat from his donation, and if he eats from it, he should guarantee what he had eaten from it. They [the scholars] did not make any distinction between an obligatory donation and a desirable (voluntary) donation. As regards the family of the donor, the scholars stated that they may eat from his desirable donation. Therefore, whoever intends to slaughter a sheep and donate it to the poor and needy, he should not eat from that sheep, but his family may eat from it if he did not intend to donate it to specific people and his family are not included amongst them.
Allaah Knows best.
