All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
It appears - Allaah knows best – that this trace of both feet was existent during the life of the Prophet . Ibn Katheer said in his Tafseer (interpretation of the Quran): ''The traces of his (i.e. Ibraaheem’s) feet were apparent in the stone and this fact was known to the Arabs in the pre-Islamic era of ignorance. The Muslims have also found that, as Anas Ibn Maalik said: “I saw the Maqaam (Ibraaheem’s place of standing) where his (Ibraaheem’s) toes and the soles of his feet were apparent. Indeed, people had worn smooth those traces with their own hands while wiping over it.”
However, what exists now does not seem to be the traces of both feet. Shaykh Al-Munajjid mentioned in his Fataawa quoting Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen as saying: “There is no doubt that the Maqaam of Ibraaheem is something confirmed and that the thing over which the glass cover is put is the Maqaam of Ibraaheem, but the engraving that exists in it does not seem to be the traces of the two feet (of Ibraaheem), because what is historically known is that the traces of the feet had disappeared a long time ago, but these (current) engravings were dug or put as a sign only, and we cannot authoritatively assert that these engravings are the traces of the feet of Ibraaheem .
Allaah Knows best.
