What is the “Barzakh”?

Question:

What is the Barzakh? I know that corpses are under the soil and souls ascend to their Creator but do the dead visit one another?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

The Arabic word Barzakh refers to a barrier between two things. In this context, and according to Al-Fayrooz Abaadi may Allaah have mercy upon him it is the interval between death and the Day of Resurrection. Anyone who dies enters it.

With regards to the second point, souls do meet, but in a manner different from the worldly life, for the Barzakh life is a fact that we have no knowledge about because it is part of the unseen. This knowledge is exclusive to Allaah the Almighty.

Moreover, it should be known that (in the grave) souls return sometimes to their bodies and separate from it at other times – all of which occurs based on the will and power of Allaah. Being part of the unseen, such matters must be believed in and not discussed.

Allaah Knows best.
