Ruling on Playing Violent Games

Question:

Assalamualekum. What’s the ruling on playing violent games?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

What we adopt in our Fataawa is that games which are based on stimulating crime, aggression, the actions of thieves and murderers, and so forth, expose those who practice them to some educational and moral evils. Therefore, one should avoid such games, especially young children.

As for war games that instill considerable chivalry qualities such as, patience, sacrifice, planning, and so on, then there is no harm in them. However, they should be limited to those whose age is suitable for such games, in order for them to understand their meaning and realize their objectives.

To conclude, the ruling on games that involve scenes of violence depends on their impact on those who play them, and the motives and ideas that such games disseminate and call to.
