All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
The Quran indicated in several verses that the Day of Resurrection will be difficult for the disbelievers and easy for the believers, as in the Saying the Allah Says (which means): {And it will be upon the disbelievers a difficult Day.} [Quran 25:26]
The verse indicates that the Day of Judgement will be easy for the believers, as in the Saying of Allah (which means): {And when the trumpet is blown. That Day will be a difficult day. For the disbelievers - not easy.} [Quran 74:8-10]
Mulla Al-Qaari said in Mirqaat Al-Mafaateeh: "It means that it will be easy for the believers; either in quantity or quality; or both in quantity and quality." [End of quote]
This easiness for the believers does not contradict what is mentioned in some Ahadeeth that the people will hurry on the Day of Resurrection to the Prophets to ask them to intercede with Allah for them to save them from the grief and distress which they experience. This is because even though they share the same situation with all the people in that great position and the length of this period, yet their distress will slowly be relieved and they will continue to experience easiness upon easiness until they settle in Paradise – we ask Allah to make us among the people of Paradise.
Al-Qurtubi said in his book At-Tathkirah:
"With regard to the believers, their difficulties will be relieved and they will experience ease after ease. The length period of standing (for reckoning) will be solved by speeding up their reckoning and by making the balance (of good deeds) heavier, and by making it easy for them to pass the Siraat (the bridge over Hellfire) and by being overshadowed by their good deeds. However, none of these difficulties will be relieved for the disbelievers. Whenever not of these difficulties end they move to a difficulty that is even worse than the previous one, until they end up in Hellfire, which will be their eternal abode." [End of quote]
Among the easiness upon the believers is that Allah will inspire them to ask for intercession in order to come out of their situation.
The Hadeeth reported by Muslim about the believers asking the Prophets for intercession reads: "The believers will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection, and they will be concerned about it [intercession], or will be inspired to seek it."
It means that Allah will inspire them to ask for intercession; Allah enables them to this effect and makes it easy for them.
As regards the Hadeeth in which the Prophet said: "I swear by Him in Whose Hands my soul is, verily the matter will be made easy for the believer until it becomes easier for him than praying an obligatory prayer in the worldly life."; then the scholars differed in opinion about the chain of narration of this Hadeeth; some classified it as Dha’eef (inauthentic), whereas some others classified it as Hassan (sound).
For instance, Al-Albaani and Shu’ayb Al-Arna’oot classified it as Dha’eef, whereas Al-Asqalaani classified it as Hassan.
If we presume that this Hadeeth is confirmed, then if the period of distress and anguish is shortened, then it becomes easy on the person compared to the situation of another person whose case is prolonged.
Some interpreters of the Hadeeth stated that this easiness differs from one believer to the other. For example, it will be easier for the one whose faith is complete than the one whose faith is lesser than him, although easiness and relief includes all the believers as we have already stated.
Allah knows best.
