Question:

What is the Sharee‘ah ruling when a woman dyes her hair with something other than black? Knowing that this dye includes some alcoholic substances, is the prayer valid in this case?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

To us, the preponderant opinion is that alcohol is impure. When something impure mixes with dyes or other such substances, they become impure as well. Consequently, neither men nor women are permitted to use dye containing alcoholic substances. One is required to be pure and avoid impure things. The order to avoid impurity becomes asserted when it is difficult to remove its trace, such as dyes and other substances.

The prayer of one whose hair is dyed with something impure, it is valid provided that the impurity is washed until the color of the effluent water is clear. Giving examples of things that become pure even though the color still remains, the Maaliki scholar, Al-Hattaab may Allaah have mercy upon him said: "As when one dyes his hair with something impure and then washes it even though the color still remains."

Allaah Knows best.
