An Adult, Sane, Unmarried Woman Can Live Wherever She Wishes with some Conditions

Question:

Assalamu Alaykum, I am a 20-year-old single woman, I have a question on whether or not it is permissible for me to move out of my parent's house and into dorms for school or into close housing. living on the campus will be much easier for me as I know drive 30 minutes to school and 30 mins back and will also help me concentrate on my studies. I also work and would be able to support myself. Please let me know Sheik.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

It is permissible for a rational, adult woman to live outside her family’s house, if the place to which she will move is safe for her from any harm that may inflict her because of it in her religion or her honor, and provided that she observes the Islamic conditions such as wearing the Hijaab when she goes out and other conditions.

Zakariyyah al-Ansaari said in Asna al-Mataalib:

“An adult, sane, unmarried woman can live wherever she wishes even if she is a virgin…” [End of quote]
