All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
The majority of the scholars are of the view that it is permissible to take a fee for teaching the Book of Allah Almighty. Among the evidence for that from the Sunnah is the Hadeeth narrated by Ibn ‘Abbaas that the Prophet said: “The wage that you deserve most is the one you take for (teaching) the Quran.” [Al-Bukhari]
As-San’aani said in Subul As-Salaam, commenting on this authentic Hadeeth:
“The majority of the scholars, Maalik, and ash-Shaafi’i are of the view that it is permissible to take a fee for teaching the Quran, whether the learner is young or old, even if it is obligatory on the teacher to teach it, in accordance with the Hadeeth of Ibn ‘Abbaas . The evidence for this is also what will come in the Chapter of Marriage, that the Prophet made a man teaching his wife the Quran as bridal money for her.” [End of quote]
Therefore, according to the view of the majority of the scholars, it is permissible for you to take a fee for teaching the Quran whether it is with the rules of recitation or without it.
This fee that you take for teaching the Quran becomes your property like the rest of your wealth, so it is permissible for you to dispose of it as you wish. This includes paying Zakaah with it, buying a sacrificial animal, or any other matter.
