Purity Is Not Obligatory for Calling Athaan

Question:

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu. Is it obligatory to be in the state of wudhu to give azan?
Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Purity is neither a condition for the validity of the Athaan (call to prayer), nor is it obligatory, but it is only desirable.

If a person calls the Athaan without being in a state of purity, then his Athaan is sufficient but he misses what is desirable.

An-Nawawi may Allaah have mercy upon him said in al-Majmoo’:

“It is desirable that the Muath-thin (the person who call the Athaan) calls the Athaan while he is in a state of purity. In case he calls the Athaan while he is not in a state of ablution or is in a state of Janaabah (state of being in sexual defilement), or calls the Iqaamah for the prayer while he is not in a state of ablution or is in a state of Janaabah then his Athaan is valid as well as his Iqaamah, but it is disliked.” [End of quote]
