Question:

I want to ask that I have a friend who has difficulty in his marriage. The problem is he likes his wife and he has 3 years-old son. He lives with his parents his wife quarrels with his mom a lot and his mom said that he should divorce. His wife can not change the habit of quarreling. What he should do keep or divorce? We'll be looking forward to hear from you. Please reply as soon as possible.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

We advise your friend to reconcile between his mother and his wife and learn the reasons for their quarrelling. Then he should do his utmost to find a solution for it. If the solution is to find a separate house for his wife and he is able to obtain it even by renting, he has to offer his wife this separate house if his parents are not in need of him, or are in need of him but he was able to find someone else to serve them. It is one of the rights of the wife on her husband to offer her a separate house. As regards his mother ordering him to divorce his wife, he should not obey her in this matter, especially since he has a child from this wife. Not obeying his mother in this matter does not mean that he is disobedient to her. He has to try his best to be kind and dutiful to his mother, and to keep his wife. We advise your friend's wife not to spare any effort to help her husband be dutiful to his mother, and we advise her to help him reconcile between her and his mother. Keeping good relations is required among Muslims in general, and it is more confirmed amongst family members and those who are related by marriage.

Allaah Knows best.
