Benefiting from memorizing the Qur'an

Question:

I want to memorise Qur'an, Inshaa Allaah, however, am just confused how to make my intention solely for the sake of Allah because my decision (memorising Qur'an) was by large influenced by the fact that memorising Qur'an enhances memory. In other words, I have read somewhere that memorising Qur'an is the best way to enhance memory abilities so I decided to do so. However, I want to have the reward (Ajr) in the Hereafter Inshaa Allaah, of doing so as well. My question is how can I benefit from both?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

To sincerely devote the intention to Allaah in memorizing the Qur'an is to intend to get nearer to Allaah by memorizing it, performing prayers by reciting the Qur'an, and to intend at the same time to remove ignorance from oneself and act according to its rulings and adhere to its limits. So if the person who wants to memorize the Qur'an has this intention, we hope that sincerity is achieved and thus his memory will be consequently strengthened as well. As for memorizing the Qur'an only with the intention of strengthening one's memory, and without considering the reward from Allaah, then if one is not sinful, it would reflect that he has a low ambition and that his heart is attached to this worldly life.

To conclude, we advise you to go ahead with your determination of memorizing the Qur'an whilst having a sincere intention to attain Allaah's Reward, and intending by memorizing the Qur'an to get near to Allaah and achieve His Pleasure. Consequently your memory will be automatically strengthened.

Allaah knows best.
