All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
Allaah only permitted the use of Daff (i.e. tambourine) in weddings and 'Eed. It is confirmed that Ar-Rubayyi' narrated: "The Prophet entered to my room the day he consumed the marriage with me, and he sat on my bed, as you are now sitting in front of me, and the young girls were beating the Daff praising their fathers who died in the battle of Badr." [Al-Bukhari] Furthermore, Muhammad Ibn Haatib said: "The Prophet said: "The difference between what is permissible and what is forbidden is Daff and voice (i.e. announcing marriage)."
As regards using other musical instruments, whether that is in weddings or else, the Prophet said: "Allaah has forbidden for me intoxicants, gambling and drum; and any drink that causes drunkenness is forbidden." [Abu Daawood and Ahmad]
Imaam Al-Qurtubi said: 'There is no difference of opinion that it is forbidden to listen to musical instruments, strings (like guitars) and drums, and I have not heard any outstanding scholar, from the Salaf or the contemporary ones who permitted listening to them [the mentioned musical instruments]. How could these things not be forbidden as they are the slogan of dissolute people and the drunkards, because they [instruments] incite desires, lead to corruption and dissoluteness? Since this is the case, no one can doubt that they are forbidden or doubt that those who do that are indeed dissolute people.'
Allaah Knows best.
