Question:

Hello, my name is Nora and im 15 years old. I have a question about my hijab, I want to wear it but my mother and father do not like it at all and are forcing me to take it off. What should I do? When I told my mother that I would get punished on the Day of Judgement she told me that she will take that responsibility and I wouldnt get in trouble because it wasnt my choice to take it off and I have to obey my parents. What should I do? Should I listen to my parents or wear the scarf behind their backs?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

We have already addressed this issue in fatwa 90199, so please refer to it.

You may consider taking advantage of the freedom laws for individuals if this would help you in your case. For more benefit on the ruling of Hijab, please refer to Fataawa 87320, 85250 and 84523.

As regards the saying of your mother that she will bear the responsibility on the Day of Judgement for the sin of you not wearing Hijab, if she actually said this, then this is an abominable act and she should be advised to repent from this, as it is a statement that contradicts the religious legislation. Allaah Says (what means): {…nor can the bearer of a burden bear the burden of another.} [Quran 17:15]. Allaah further Says (what means): {Every person is a pledge for what he has earned.} [Quran 74:38].

Finally, we ask Allaah to enable us to remain steadfast upon the truth and reward you for being keen on holding fast to your religion.

Allaah Knows best.
