Is it permissible to write the two testimonies of faith, the name of the husband or wife or one of the Most Beautiful Names of Allaah Almighty on a gold or silver ring?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Writing the two testimonies of faith or the Names of Allaah Almighty on gold and silver or anything else is permissible if this is not a means to show disrespect of them. It is authentically narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, had an engraving on his ring which read: 'Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah'. He used to remove it when he entered the place where he answered the call of nature. This was mentioned by Al-Bayhaqi on the authority of Anas ibn Maalik .
Concerning writing the name of one of the spouses on the ring of the other, this is originally permissible unless it is intended to imitate non-Muslims. An-Nawawi said: "One may engrave his own name or a wise saying along with words meant for mentioning Allaah Almighty on it (a ring)."
Allaah Knows best.
