Assalaamu 'Alaikum!
A brother named his son "Salman Rahman" when he was not that religious. Now he feels that it was inappropriate to name his son like that. The son is now 14 years old. My question is that, is there a sin in naming children like that? And does he NEED to change the name now?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
It is not permissible to be named with a name that is peculiar to Allaah as stated by the jurists . For instance, Al-Buhooti from the Hanbali School of jurisprudence, said: “It is also forbidden to name with a name that is only befitting Allaah, like Quddoos (The Holy), Al-Barr (The Benevolent), Khaaliq (The Creator), and Rahmaan (The Most Gracious), because the meaning of these Names is not befitting other than Allaah.”
Therefore, it is an obligation to change this name, and it is possible to just name with the name Salmaan, which is a name of a noble companion .
