Islam.. a complete code of life

Question

Is Islam a complete code of life?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

There is no doubt that the rulings of Islam are comprehensive and include all fields of life, and believing in this is part of ‘Eemaan (faith). Allah The Almighty says (what means): {Say, “Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the world.} [Quran 6:162]

We will mention here some examples from the Book of Allah about this comprehensiveness.

About civil and economic matters, Allah The Almighty says (what means): {O you who have believed, when you contract a debt for a specified term, write it down. And let a scribe write [it] between you in justice. Let no scribe refuse to write as Allah has taught him. So let him write and let the one who has the obligation [i.e. the debtor] dictate. And let him fear Allah, his Lord, and not leave anything out of it. But if the one who has the obligation is of limited understanding or weak or unable to dictate himself, then let his guardian dictate in justice. And bring to witness two witnesses from among your men. And if there are not two men [available], then a man and two women from those whom you accept as witnesses-so that if one of them [i.e. the women] errs, then the other can remind her. And let not the witnesses refuse when they are called upon. And do not be [too] weary to write it, whether it is small or large, for its [specified] term. That is more just in the sight of Allah and stronger as evidence and more likely to prevent doubt between you, except when it is an immediate transaction which you conduct among yourselves. For [then] there is no blame upon you if you do not write it. And take witnesses when you conclude a contract. Let no scribe be harmed or any witness. For if you do so, indeed, it is [grave] disobedience in you. And fear Allah. And Allah teaches you. And Allah is Knowing of all things.} [Quran 2:282]

With regard to matters related to the constitution, Allah The Almighty says (what means): {… and whose affair is [determined by] consultation.} [Quran 42:38]

With regard to judicial matters, Allah The Almighty says (what means): {…and when you judge between people to judge with justice.} [Quran 4:58]

About criminal penalties, Allah The Almighty says (what means): {O you who have believed, prescribed for you is legal retribution for those murdered-the free for the free, the slave for the slave, and the female for the female.} [Quran 2:178]

About war preparations, Allah The Almighty says (what means): {And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows.} [Quran 8:60]

With regard to international relations, Allah The Almighty says (what means): {Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes — from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.} [Quran 60:8]

Moreover, we can find countless examples in the Sunnah (Prophetic tradition) and Islamic jurisprudence about the comprehensive nature of Islam.
