Assalaamualaykum I would be very grateful if you could please confirm the following information regarding Eid al adha and Qurbani: 1. The Messenger (pbuh) sacrificed on the tenth day of Dhul Hijjahh while he was in Medina. (Sunan Baihaqi). 2. The Messenger (pbuh) started Eid al-Adha prayer from the second year in Medina (or some say 1st year) after he performed hijrah 3. Reported on the authority of Ibn Umar (RA): Rasulallah (SAW) lived in Medina for ten years and made sacrifice (on eid al adha) each year there. (Tirmidhi).
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
There is absolutely no doubt that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, used to slaughter his sacrifice on the Day of Sacrifice (i.e. 10th of Thul-Hijjah). The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, used to slaughter his sacrifice in Al-Musalla (i.e. an open place where Muslims gather to perform ‘Eed prayer) after performing ‘Eed prayer as it was stated in many Ahaadeeth. As for the year when the ‘Eed prayer was first legislated, the well-known date for that is the 2nd year after Hijrah. Al-Buhooti said in Haashiyat Ar-Rawdh: "It is well-known in books of Seerah (biography of the Prophet) that the first ‘Eed prayer the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, performed was ‘Eed Al-Fitr in the 2nd year after Hijrah. He, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, continued to perform it regularly until he passed away." [End quote]
As for the Hadeeth narrated by Ibn ‘Umar, and reported by At-Tirmithi, then its wording is as follows: "The Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, stayed in Al-Madeenah for ten years and used to slaughter sacrificial animals each year." [Abu ‘Eesa (At-Tirmithi) said: it is a Hasan (good) Hadeeth and its chain of transmission includes Hajjaaj ibn Arta'ah who is known to be a subject of dispute among the scholars of Hadeeth.]
Allaah Knows best.
