Working in a place where non-Muslim festival related things are made

Question

Assalaam alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh. How i have understood in my country there is a place organized by the government where you can work three days in a week only 4 hours on each day. It is a workshop kind of place, i mean a place where you can do different kind of things like wood related things etc. But that place accepts non-muslim festival related things, like sometimes some people craft christmas elves. It may be that sometimes they do them in the same room where others do something else. What is the ruling on working in such a place if you do not help them with anything which is haram? May Allah make it easy for you to find time to answer in my question, aamin. Jazakumullahu khayran.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is not permissible to work in such a place where there is a sin, even if the work does not involve helping in making statues because a Muslim is prohibited from sitting at a place where Allaah is being disobeyed, as Allaah says (what means): {And it has already come down to you in the Book [i.e. the Quran] that when you hear the verses of Allaah [recited] they are denied [by them] and ridiculed; so do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation. Indeed, you would then be like them.}[Quran 4:140]

Ibn ‘Uthaymeen may Allaah have mercy upon him was asked: The listener says that he works with a man who insists on committing sins and does not heed advice. I brought him some religious books hoping that he would be enlightened by them, but that was in vain. So, should I abandon working with him despite the fact that work is very scarce in our locality?" He answered as follows: “If he commits the sin in your presence because the nature of work requires that you be present while he commits the sin, then it is not permissible for you to stay in this job, because sitting with disobedient people is an act of disobedience and is participating with them in sin, as Allaah says (what means): {And it has already come down to you in the Book [i.e. the Quran] that when you hear the verses of Allaah [recited] they are denied [by them] and ridiculed; so do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation. Indeed, you would then be like them.}, i.e. if you sit with them then you are like them. But if the disobedience that he commits is outside the work that you are sharing with him, then it is permissible for you to stay in your job as you did not see the sins that he commits and you are not pleased with them.” This is a summary of an excerpt from the Fataawa (in the program) Noor ‘Ala-Ad-Darb.

Allaah Knows best.
