{So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment}

Question

Assalaamu 'alaykum. Some time ago I came across a narration found in Ibn Kathir, Surah 78, Ayah 30. It goes as follows: "They will continue increasing in torment forever.'' It is attributed to 'Abdullah bin `Amr. Is this narration authentic? Jazakallahu Khayran.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

The narration cited by Ibn Katheer in his Tafseer book was cited by At-Tabari as a Mawqoof report (i.e. traced back to a Companion) from ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Amr may Allaah be pleased with them. He may Allaah have mercy upon him cited another Marfoo‘ report (i.e. traced back to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) to the same effect, but he said that its chain of narration is weak. Al-Haafith Ibn Hajar cited both narrations in his book Fat-h Al-Baari but did not comment on them (or their authenticity).

After research, we could not find any Hadeeth scholar who declared this narration as authentic or inauthentic.

Allaah Knows best.
