All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
If ejaculation occurs on the part of the man or the woman during the sexual intercourse, Ghusl becomes obligatory. If there is no ejaculation, then the scholars differed in opinion about the obligation of Ghusl if sexual intercourse occurs with an obstruction into three opinions which Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen mentioned in his Commentary on Zaad Al-Mustaqni‘. He said:
1) Some scholars said: For Ghusl to be obligatory, it is a condition that intercourse occurs without an obstruction, because with the obstruction, it does not hold that the two circumcised parts meet each other [as stated in a Hadeeth], so it is not an obligation to make Ghusl.
2) Some other scholars said: It is an obligation to make Ghusl as the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "When he sits between her four parts (the arms and legs of his wife) and has intercourse with her, then Ghusl is obligatory." This happens even with the obstruction.
3) Other scholars elaborated, saying: if the barrier is thin in a such a way that full pleasure is achieved, then Ghusl becomes obligatory, and if the barrier is not thin, then it is not obligatory to perform Ghusl, but it is better to perform Ghusl in order to be on the safe side. [End of quote]
The view that we adopt here at Islamweb, which is the most valid one, is that Ghusl is absolutely obligatory on anyone who has sexual intercourse even using a condom; this is the most sound view of the Shaafi‘i School, and one view of the Hanbali, Hanafi and Maaliki Schools. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 81913.
The wife has to wash her hair whether it is long or short, and it is not permissible for her to just wipe over her hair with water; rather, her Ghusl is not valid unless she washes her hair.
For more benefit on the obligation of washing the entire hair when performing Ghusl, and making water reach the roots of the hair (the scalp), please refer to Fataawa 81699 and 87482.
Allaah Knows best.
