Using names like Hameedah for women

Question

Is it right to take Allaah's name for women? Like changing Hameed to Hameedah for women?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is permissible to name a woman 'Hameedah'; in fact, this name existed in the time of the Taabiʻeen (those who came after the Prophtet's companions), and we could not find any statement of the scholars criticizing bearing such a name. Az-Zarqaani may Allaah have mercy upon him wrote, "Hameedah was a young female from the Taabiʻeen whose narration was approved by hadeeth scholars..." [Sharh Al-Muwatta’]

Al-Haafith wrote, "Hameedah narrated on the authority of Umm Salamah. She was the mother of a son born to Ibraaheem ibn ʻAwf..." [At-Taqreeb]

The scholars maintained that it is permissible to use names that may be used in reference to Allaah, The Exalted, or others; it is permissible to use these names, such as ʻAli, Rasheed and Badeeʻ. It is prohibited to use the names that belong only to Allaah, The Exalted, and these include: Al-Khaaliq (the Creator), Ar-Rahmaan (Most Merciful), Al-Quddoos (Most Holy), Al-Awwal (the First), Al-Aakhir (the Last), Al-Baatin (the Hidden) and the like.
