Question
Assalaamu alaykoum, Shaykh. In general terms, I do not care about the disbelievers. Sometimes, however, when I meet people whom I grew up or studied with (before becoming a practicing Muslim), I feel ashamed when I meet them in a completely different state; as a practicing Muslim with a beard and so on. Is that a sign of weak faith or hypocrisy?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Feeling ashamed of the rituals of Islam and of your appearance as a practicing Muslim is blameworthy. There is no doubt that it reflects some sort of deficiency. Rather, you should be proud to belong to this religion which Allah honored you with and guided you to while others are misled. All praise be to Allah; we have nothing to be ashamed of in our religion or to be embarrassed to show. Islam is the religion that conforms to sound human nature, enjoins refined and lofty matters, and forbids inferior and trivial matters. It is the religion that brings all that intelligent minds find perfect and beautiful. You should be proud of your religion, rejoice at the grace of your Lord, and strive in calling others to Islam and guiding them to the straight path to which Allah, The Exalted, has guided you.
