Events that occurred on 10th of Muharram ('Aashooraa')

Question

Assalaamu alaykum. I would like you to mention the things that happened on the 10th of Muharram. Some people said that Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, married Khadeejah, may Allaah be pleased with her, on this day, and some say that doomsday will happen on this day. Did the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, migrate from Makkah to Madeenah on that day? I want to know whether all these are true facts or merely superstition?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

There are some events that took place on the tenth of the month of Muharram, including:

1- Moses and the believers among his people were saved from Pharaoh. This was confirmed in an authentic hadeeth.

2- Aaminah bint Wahb became pregnant with the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). This was reported by Ibn Katheer in As-Seerah from the narration by Al-Haafith Ibn ‘Asaakir.

3- The detachment led by Muhammad ibn Maslamah towards Najd. This is the detachment during which Thumaamah ibn Uthaal was taken as a prisoner. Al-Bayhaqi mentioned this in Dalaa’il An-Nubuwwah.

4- The assassination of Al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali, may Allah be pleased with him. Al-Haakim reported this in Al-Mustadrak and Abu Nu’aym reported it in Ma’rifatus-Sahaabah.

5- The time when the Ka’bah used to be clothed each year, which was on the day of ‘Aashooraa’ [this was in the old times and not now]. The hadeeth regarding this was reported by Al-Bukhari in his Saheeh.

However, after investigation, we have not come across a hadeeth, a statement of the Companions, or a saying of the scholars that says that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) married Khadeejah, may Allah be pleased with her, on this day.

Anwar Al-Kashmeeri mentioned in his book, Al-‘Arf Ash-Shathi that there is a strong hadeeth that says that the Hour will take place on the tenth of Muharram, but we have not been able to find this hadeeth. On the other hand, there was a hadeeth that states that the Hour will take place on ‘Aashooraa’, and Ibn Hajar stated in Lisaan Al-Meezaan that Ibn Al-Jawzi reported it in Al-Mawdhoo’aat (the Fabricated Ahaadeeth) and then said, “No sound person would doubt that this hadeeth is not fabricated.

There is another hadeeth which states that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) came to Madeenah on the Day of ‘Aashooraa’ and learned that the Jews were fasting on this day. This hadeeth was reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim and narrated by Ibn Abbaas, may Allah be pleased with him.

However, MubaarakPoori said in Mir’aat Al-Mafaateeh:

"This hadeeth is a bit confusing as it indicates that when the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) came to Madeenah, he learned that the Jews were fasting on the day of ‘Aashooraa’, because the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) came to Madeenah in Rabee’ Al-Awwal, and the answer to this is that what is meant is that the first time he sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) knew about it and asked about it was after he had come to Madeenah, or that there are some parts of the narration that have been omitted. So what can be understood is that he sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) came to Madeenah and stayed in it until the Day of ‘Aashooraa’ and then learned that the Jews were fasting on this day, and it is probable that those Jews calculated the day of ‘Aashooraa’ according to the Gregorian calendar…

Allah knows best.
