If someone asks me to convey the Salaam (greeting) to another person, does it become obligatory upon me to do so?
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
Conveying the Salaam to the person whom one is asked to convey the Salaam to is obligatory [Waajib] according to some scholars, such as the Shaafi'i School of Fiqh. According to some of these scholars, it is understood to mean if the person asked to convey the Salaam committed himself to do that; in which case he is obliged to convey it, because in this case it has become a trust.
Ibn Muflih said in Al-Aadaab Ash-Shar’iyyah:
"The Shaafi'i scholars said: It is recommended to send the Salaam, and the messenger (the person entrusted to convey it) is obliged to convey it. This is obligatory if he committed himself to do it because he is commanded to fulfill the trust, otherwise it is not obligatory.
‘Aa’ishah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet said, 'O ‘Aa’ishah! This is Jibreel (Gabriel), and he is conveying Salaam to you.' She said, 'And upon him be peace and the mercy of Allah.' [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]"
Allah knows best.
