Assalaamu alaykum. I am doing my graduation in a mixed university. I am doing my graduation in accounting. I wear a proper hijab, niqab, and gloves. I do not talk to boys unnecessarily. I try to lower my gaze even though I study in a mixed university. I want to complete my study to serve Islam. Here in my country, many women work in bank, many girls dream of working in a bank or other corporate companies. Many women's husbands work in banks and in insurance companies. They do not have proper knowledge about it. So I want to continue my studies with the intention of making them aware of it. I even want to help my future husband and children with these matters. My question is: should I continue my study with the intention of serve the religion even though I do so in a mixed university? I cannot go to another one. I hope for a quick reply. May Allah reward you.
All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
First of all, may Allah reward you for your keenness on staying steadfast on the obedience of Allah and avoiding what is not pleasing to Him, such as mixing and dressing immodestly. May Allah make you firm on the truth and make you successful in your religion and your worldly life.
We have previously highlighted the conditions for the study of a girl in a mixed university in some fatwas, so please refer to fatwas 82730 and 90355.
In brief, it is not permissible to continue studying in a mixed university except for a necessity or dire need while abiding by the Islamic conditions of wearing the hijab, avoiding reasons of Fitnah (temptation), and the like. What you mentioned about serving the religion and teaching the ignorant people and helping your husband and your children is not considered a dire need that renders this study permissible.
The criteria of need according to the scholars of Fiqh is what a person needs to remove hardship that may affect him and make him miss what is required by not fulfilling this need.
It should be noted here that it is an obligation on the husband to spend on his wife and children, and the wife is not obliged to spend on herself or her husband or her children. However, if the husband is poor and the wife needs to work to help him and it is difficult for her to find work without university studies, then this need may make what is forbidden permissible.
On the other hand, if there is any harm or hardship that may affect you by leaving this study because of being in the final year and because of the lack of non-mixed universities while you abide by the hijab and avoid the reasons of Fitnah, then we hope that there is nothing wrong with continuing to study in this university, and you should be in the university according to the need only.
Allah knows best.
