Saheeh At-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb by Al-Albaani

Question

Assalam aalekum sheikh I read sahih at Targheeb wat Tarheeb please tell me whether all the Hadith present in sahi at Targheeb wat targheeb is authentic this book contains 3775 Hadith.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Al-Albaani’s book: Saheeh At-Targheeb wa At-Tarheeb is a useful book wherein he may Allaah have mercy upon him cited the Ahaadeeth which he classified as Saheeh (authentic) from those (Hadeeths that were) cited by Al-Munthiri, may Allaah have mercy upon him, in the original book (At-Targheeb wa At-Tarheeb). All the Ahaadeeth included by Al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy upon him, in this book were considered acceptable and authentically established Ahaadeeth “according to his criteria,” and this does not necessarily mean that each and every Hadeeth of them is Saheeh Li-Thaatihi (authentic in and of itself). Rather, some Ahaadeeth therein are Saheeh Li-Thaatihi and others are Saheeh Li-Ghayrihi (authentic due to other corroborating reports); some are Hasan Li-Thaatihi (Sound in and of itself) and others are Hasan Li-Ghayrihi (Sound due to other corroborating reports). The point is that these Ahaadeeth were authentic according to Al-Albaani may Allaah have mercy upon him though the authenticity of some of them may be disputed. He, may Allaah have mercy upon him, retracted his opinion on some of them and transferred them from Saheeh At-Targheeb to Dha‘eef At-Targheeb, which is not strange given that this is one of the matters open for Ijtihaad [independent reasoning by qualified scholars]. The author of Taraaju‘aat Al-Albaani said: "It has been narrated on the authority of Umm Salamah may Allaah be pleased with her that the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) used to fast more often on Saturdays and Sundays than on any other days, and would say: ‘They are two days of ‘Eed for the polytheists, and I wish to act contrary to what they do.'" [Saheeh At-Targheeb, 2nd ed., no. 1041] The Hadeeth was cited in Saheeh Al-Jaami‘ under no. 4803 with the wording: "‘Most of his fasting was on Saturdays and Sundays …’ This Hadeeth was cited in Dha‘eef At-Targheeb, Al-Ma‘aarif ed., no. 639, and it is one of the Ahaadeeth that were deleted by the Shaykh from Saheeh At-Targheeb." Allah Knows best.
