Is the blood of fish pure? Please answer the question in details.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
The Hanafi scholars are of the view that the blood of fish is pure. This is also the soundest opinion of the Hanbali scholars and one of the Shaafi‘i scholars' relevant opinions. Al-Haskafi, may Allaah Have mercy upon him, a Hanafi scholar, said: “The blood of fish and the saliva of a mule and donkey are pardoned. The Hanafi opinion is that such things are pure.”
Ibn ‘Aabideen a Hanafi scholar, said: “The opinion of the Hanafi scholars is that the blood of fish is pure because it is not blood in the true sense of the word.”
Ibn Muflih a Hanbali scholar, said: “The blood of fish is pure, according to the soundest opinion.”
The soundest opinion of the Maaliki and Shaafi‘i scholars, and one of the opinions of the Hanbali scholars is that the blood of fish is impure, based on the general indication of the verse in which Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine….} [Quran 5: 3]
It is narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “Made lawful for you are the flesh of two dead animals and two types of blood. As for the two dead animals, they are the locust and the fish. The two types of blood are the blood of the spleen and the liver.” [Ahmad and others]
Only the blood of the liver and the spleen are exempted. Al-Baaji a Maaliki scholar, said: “The blood of fish is impure. This is also the opinion of Ash-Shaafi‘i. Abu Haneefah, however, held the opinion that it is pure.”
An-Nawawi a Shaafi‘i scholar, said: “The two opinions regarding the blood of fish are famous. The soundest opinion, however, is that it is impure.”
Allaah Knows best.
