Ahsanallahu ilaikum. Dear Mashaikh, may I ask a question. Is discrete mathematics or boolean logic is manthiq that has been prohibited by the scholars; is it allowed to study discrete mathematics?Thank you. Jazaakumullahu khoiro.
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
There is no harm Islamically in studying this type or other mathematical sciences, and it is not part of the science of logic that previous scholars spoke about.
Moreover, a large number of scholars have permitted the study of the science of logic – that is devoid of false philosophy – and some of them have even considered it a communal obligation.
Ibn ‘Aabideen said in his commentary on Ad-Durr al-Mukhtar: “As for the logic of the Islamists whose introductions are Islamic rules, then there is no reason to say that it is prohibited. Rather, Al-Ghazaali called it the standard of sciences, and the scholars of Islam wrote about it.
