Using the Word Nār Instead of Jahannam

Question

The dua "Allahumma innee aAAoothu bika min AAathabil-qabr, wamin AAathabi jahannam, wamin fitnatil-mahya walmamat, wamin shari fitnatil-maseehid-dajjal" I have noticed that some replace the word jahannam with naar. Is this permissible? Do they mean the same?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

There is no harm in mentioning either of the two names when seeking refuge from Allah's punishment in prayer and outside of it, as both are names of the abode of punishment in the Hereafter. Allah has mentioned in His Holy Book the believers' seeking refuge from torment of Hell, as Allah the Almighty says (what means): {Our Lord! We have believed, so forgive our sins and protect us from the torment of the Fire (Nār).} [Quran 3:16]

Similarly, Allah the Almighty also mentioned the supplication of the noble angels to protect the believers from the torment of Hell, as Allah the Almighty says (what means): {Thus, forgive those who repent and follow Your Way, and protect them from the torment of the Hellfire (Jahīm).} [Quran 40:7]

Allah knows best.
