Using AI For Tests and Assignments

Question

Is the use of AI in a test considered plagiarism, which is therefore Haram? There are 2 cases: 1) We ask the AI to generate a template, and then we alter and pass it as off as our own. 2) We copy directly from AI. The AI is like a tool which generates the prompts, therefore is it still considered as another person’s work?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

It is not permissible for a student to rely entirely on artificial intelligence in completing an assignment, and then present it as though he had accomplished it through his own effort and ideas; this constitutes cheating and a false claim to that which one was not given. It is reported in a hadith from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: “Whoever cheats is not one of us.” [Muslim]

Similarly, He, peace and blessings be upon him, stated in another hadith: “The one who falsely claims what he was not given is like one who wears two garments of falsehood.” [Al-Bukhārī and Muslim]

The fatwa of Dār al-Iftāʾ al-Miṣriyyah states: “Artificial intelligence is a permissible means for producing academic content, so long as it serves merely as a supportive tool in research and the gathering of information—provided that its user has already mastered this stage of academic research and is fully capable of performing it without artificial intelligence; and provided that the user remains the principal contributor, in that he verifies the accuracy of the information, attributes it to its rightful sources, and undertakes its organization and arrangement himself. However, if the user employs artificial intelligence to produce the content in its entirety, and then attributes that content to himself without having expended the research, reflection, study, and diligence that are required of him, then this is unlawful (ḥarām); for it involves cheating, deception, falsehood, and a false claim to what one was not given, as well as the disabling of the human intellect—together with the risks this carries of academic plagiarism and erroneous information.” [End of citation]

Allah Knows best.
