A man suffers from urine incontinence which usually lasts about 30 minutes after urination. Once, he was in a state of Janabah (major ritual impurity) and had not yet performed the Thuhr (noon) prayer. He urinated a few minutes before the due time of the ‘Asr (afternoon) prayer. Was he required to make Ghusl (shower taken when in a state of Janabah) and perform the Thuhr prayer despite the discharge of urine and then make Ghusl again after the cessation of urine? Was he allowed to wait and then combine both the Thuhr and ‘Asr prayers in deferred combination? Please advise.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
When a person suffering from urine incontinence is in a state of Janabah, he has to make Ghusl in order to remove that state, and he is blameless for the discharge of urine. When the discharge of urine ceases, he has to make Wudhoo’ (ablution) and then pray. If there is a continuous discharge of urine, he is not permitted to delay the prayer until its due time is over. Rather, he has to wash his penis properly, wrap it with a piece of cloth or a similar object, avoid staining himself with urine as much as he could and then perform Wudhoo’ and pray. He is blameless for any discharge of urine during Wudhoo’ or prayer because he is excused. He is also allowed to combine both the Thuhr and ‘Asr prayers or the Maghrib (sunset) and ‘Isha’ (night) prayers, whether in advance or deferred.
Allaah Knows best.
