Is it permissible to use starch for making ceramic dough, which is used in making decorative flowers?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Starch should not be added to the dough which is used for making decorative flowers. Food is a blessing from Allaah and it must be respected and venerated. It is forbidden to contempt or disdain the blessings of Allaah. Mixing starch with impure materials, putting it in unclean containers or adding fertilizers to it features disdain and disrespect. But if this dough is used for making the flowers and is kept in clean places, then holding the permissibility of using the starch for this purpose is acceptable. However, there is no doubt that it is better to avoid this and use other adhesive materials instead, such as glue and similar materials. This is to save the blessing of Allaah and block the means of disdaining or disrespecting it.
Allaah Knows best.
