Question
Is Zakah Wajib on a piece of land that is left empty and the intention for it is to take the profit when it is sold? The land is mine for more than one year.
Answer
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the World; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
A piece of land dedicated to trade is subject to Zakah every lunar year if (1) its value (plus any addition of property) equal, 85 grams of gold; (2) it is possessed for one (haul) lunar year.
One has to know that such a piece of land is subject to Zakah as money and articles of merchandise. One important point should be mentioned here. It is mandatory to know that the Haul of this land is the Haul of the money by which the land is purchased.
In other words, you have to count the Zakah of land from the time you possessed that money not from the time of purchasing it.
