Question
If a man divorces verbally saying so onto his wife's face: "I divorce you once " and then reconciles within an hour or so and have sex with her the same day and she was not in her menstrual phase? What is his status of marriage if this scenario has happened three times in total with approximately two years interval, i.e. to say that the husband reconciled with his wife at every event the same way as first time?
Answer
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
If the issue is as you described, then the wife of this man has been divorced irrevocably. So, her former husband cannot marry her again unless she gets married to another man and the latter has sex with her. Should she be divorced, her former husband then can marry her with a completely new contract. The evidence for this is the verse. Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {And if he has divorced her (the third time), then she is not lawful unto him thereafter until she has married another husband. …} [2: 230].
