Fatwa CenterBeing with Non-Muslims Who Drink Alcohol During Dinner
Question
In my work sometimes I have to be with non-Muslims who drink alcohol when we are in meeting, specially some dinner affair. Is it haram when I accept this behavior?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad 
is His slave and Messenger.
In principle, it is forbidden to sit with people who are drinking wine as the Prophet said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not sit at a table where alcohol is served.” [At-Tirmithi]
But if one is forced, then he should sit at a table on which wine is not served (i.e., in the same place) and if it is served, one has to object frankly and to tell them that such an action (drinking and meeting with drinkers) is forbidden in Islam. Then, one has to state that others are to respect his stand and feelings.
In addition, one has to be proud of his religion and demonstrate its principles and teachings.
However, it is safer and better for a Muslim to avoid meeting with non-Muslims since such a meeting may cause him to share with them forbidden actions; i.e., at least in sitting with them.
