I have a toy dog that looks like a real dog. Is it Halal to keep it at home or not? It is only a toy.
Thanks.
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
If this toy is for children to play with, then there is no harm to keep it at home, Insha Allah.
Abu Dawud reported that Aisha may Allah be pleased with her said: "The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) came back from the battle of Tabuk or Khaibar, and on her shelf there was a curtain, so the wind blew the curtain and unveiled the dolls of Aisha. So the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) asked: "O, Aisha what is this?"
Aisha replied: "They are my dolls" and the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) saw a horse with two wings among these dolls. So the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) asked: "What is it that which I see in the middle of these dolls?"
She replied: "A horse".
He said: "What is on it?"
She replied: "Two wings".
So the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "A horse with two wings?"
Aisha said: "Did you not hear that the Prophet Suleiman had horses with wings?"
Then Aisha said: "So he laughed until I saw his molar teeth". Albani, (may Allah have mercy on him) classified this Hadith as Sahih(authentic)
Moreover, imam Bukhari reported that Aisha, (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "I used to play with the doll while I was with the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) ".
Al-Shawkani, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "In the Hadith there is evidence that it is permissible to allow children to play with statues."
However, if the doll is not used for that purpose, then it is not permissible to keep it, as the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "The angels do not enter a house where there is a statue or a picture". Reported by Thirmidhi, and he classified it as a sound Hadith.
Allah knows best.
