What happens if you accidentally drop the Holy Qur'an, do you have to give money in sadaqah?
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
Glorifying the book of Allah is obligatory. Allah says: "And whosoever honors the Symbols of Allah, then it is truly from the piety of the heart. (Al-Hajj 22:32)
Al Nawawi said in Al-Majm'u: "The whole nation (of Islam) agrees that it is compulsory to fully respect and glorify the Qur'an. They are all agreed that the Qur'an should be highly deemed above every thing else and preserved as sacred."
Any one who drops the Qur'an out of humiliation and neglect is considered Kafir (disbeliever). May Allah protect us.
However, if the Qur'an falls from someone unwillingly, then this is considered as a mistake, which Allah leaves out. Allah says: "And there is no sin on you if you make a mistake therein, except in regard to what your hearts deliberately intend. (Al-Ahzab 33:5)
Ibn Majah reported, narrated Abu Dhar that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "Allah has forgiven for my Ummah (nation) their mistakes, what they forgot and whatever they were compelled to do."
So, there is no expiation for such an act, nor is there a Sadaqa or other. But if the Holy Qur'an falls from the hands of a person, he should pick it up immediately and repent to Allah.
Allah knows best.
