Shaving pubic hair does not need parents' permission

Question

My parents never told me about shaving pubic hair. If I do it without telling them, is that a sin?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

Parents are obliged to teach their children the correct creed, the religious rulings and the Islamic etiquettes which they need in order to be nurtured according to Islamic principles. For instance parents have to inform their children that shaving the pubes and plucking the hair under the armpits are acts of man's natural disposition. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Five are the acts quite akin to the Fitrah (natural disposition):- shaving the pubes, circumcision, trimming the moustache, plucking the hair under the armpits and clipping the nails." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] Shaving the pubes is a recommended act and a person is not sinful for not shaving them. These five recommended acts should be done whenever the hair or nails are ready to be cut, i.e. at least one should do these every 40 days. Anas may Allaah be pleased with him narrated "A time limit has been prescribed for us for trimming the moustache, clipping the nails, plucking the hair under the armpits, shaving the pubes, that none of them should be left for more than forty nights." [Muslim] So the questioner should take the initiative to do this and there is no need to seek parents permission.

Allaah Knows best.
