Fatwa CenterNew non-Arab Muslims reading Quran and making Du’aa in English
Question
AssalamuAlikum. I'm a convert, and not able to read Arabic right now. Will I get the same reward if I read the English version of Koran?Will my supplication have the same effect if it is made in English?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad 
is His slave and Messenger.
First of all, all perfect praise be to Allaah, Who guided you to Islam and we ask Him to make you firm and steadfast on His Religion until the day you meet Him.
As regards reading the Quran in English and whether you will be rewarded for it, then if you mean reading the transliteration of the Arabic words in English, then this method is forbidden as we clarified in Fatwa 83095.
However, if you mean reading the translation of the meaning of the Quran in English, then this is a good act and we hope that you will be rewarded by Allaah for doing so. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 88411.
With regard to supplicating, there is no difference between supplicating in Arabic or in any other language in regard to the acceptance of the supplication by Allaah, as Allaah answers the supplication of a person when he supplicates Him in any language provided the supplication is free from religious prohibitions; for more benefit, please refer to Fataawa 81564 and 87759. However, the jurists 
stated that it is disliked for a person who speaks Arabic well to supplicate in a language other than Arabic.
