If I wear a manly wristwatch, does the Hadeeth of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, concerning women imitating men apply to me, knowing that I am not trying to imitate men at all and that this is not my intention in wearing it?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
It is impermissible for women to wear items that are specific to men such as clothes, watches, shoes and so on, even if they do not seek to imitate men because imitation takes place even without intention. Ibn ‘Abbaas said: “The Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, cursed women who imitate men and men who imitate women.” [Al-Bukhari]
Abu Daawood narrated that it was said to ‘Aa’ishah that some women wear manly shoes. She said: “The Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, cursed women who assume a masculine attitude.” The same applies to manly watches.
Allaah Knows best.
