His father wants him to return to his country and leave his Islamic studies

Question

Asalamu -Alikum Brother in Islam! I was born in a Muslim family, But our father do not teach us proper Islam in another words he only teachers us the Quran at the time we are little, and not even in tajweed form. After that, he sends us in the street to look for money. for me however I run away from him as I wanted to find a place or a country where I will sturdy the Islam in a proper way and understand it. I am from Sierra Leone but now I am in Mauritania studding the quran and other Islamic book both me and my wife. However, my father is till disturbing me to come back in Sierra Leone to stay with him there and leave all my studies here. My father have about 20 Children more boys, non of these are studding Islam, but for me who is trying to follow the way, he is trying to move me a way from it aging. I have done my best to advice him about the sunnah, the proper way of Islam the Aquda of the prophet SLALA ALI HI WA SALAM, but not of what other people say or call to be Islam, but his view is only to make money in this world. I have told him that what ever I get I will do all I can to help him, but I rayed to make him understand that let him put his trust in Allah, He is the Creator and the Sustainer of the world. but he is still failing to understand. Please advise, my Question is, should I live my studies and bring up my family in a Islamic country and go to Kufr country to obey my father or what can I do?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If your father had no sound reason for preventing you from continuing your studies, and you do not fear that your parents will be harmed because of you not being with them, then you are not obliged to obey your father in leaving your studies and returning to your country. Obedience to parents is not an obligation in all cases, but it has some conditions which we clarified in Fatwa 86303, so refer to it.

However, if you do not fear that you or your children will be harmed by returning to your country, then it is better for you to return to your family to teach them what Allaah has taught you and achieve the wish of your father as well. By doing so, you will combine between calling to Allaah and being kind and dutiful to your parents.

Allaah Knows best.
