Giving regular charity to organization versus saving it at home for the needy

Question

Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah As-Salaam Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullahi Wa-Barakatuhu First of all I would like to thank all of you at Islamweb for taking the time to answer to all our queries - big and small at all times. May Allah azza wajjal reward you all for your patience and hardwork. Ameen. As for my question , my husband has set up a direct debit where in £2 goes everyday to an Islamic Charity as a sadqa jariya on our behalf. This thus enables us to do small charities on a regular basis. However as we pay this , when someone actually comes to us once in a while from the extended known community, we are unable to help them at that time. My question is, is it better for us to hold onto this charity funds say in a box at home separately labelled sadaqa and may be use it for the benefit of our community or someone known to us as and how they come or should we just continue to give the daily £2 to a charitable organisation? If we were to hold the funds in a box at home and then dispose them of to our own needy community (in our villages in India) is that better for us than giving to a charitable organisation? Please advice. Jazakum Allahu Khairan.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

May Allaah reward your husband well for that charity. We ask Allaah to accept it from him. We also thank you for your cooperation with him on goodness. This is really how the righteous spouses should be.

As for the ruling of what you have asked about, it dOrdered Listiffers according to the circumstances. If the mentioned Islamic charity organization spends such money on those are more needy than your relatives, then it is better to give money to it. However, if your relatives need that money more, then it is better to give it to them, especially that spending on relatives is both charity and upholding ties of kinship as proved in the authentic Sunnah of Allaah's Messenger, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.

It is worth mentioning that amongst the benefits of giving such charity to that organization via making a direct debit is that this will help in its continuity, unlike putting it in a box at home for this may cause its interruption, so this should be taken into consideration.

Allaah Knows best.
