Fatwa CenterRuling on attending a school that bans Hijab
Question
I go to a an-all girls school where I'm not allowed to wear my hijjab. When I asked my parents to get me out, they refused saying that you'll face even more fitna learning in a mixed school. But I'm worried that I'll be sinning by not wearing the hijjab in front of my male teachers. Should I continue learning in that school?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.
Observing Hijab is an obligation for every Muslim woman as underlined in Fataawa 82174 and 84053. It is incumbent on the Muslim woman to adhere to Hijab and it is impermissible for her to give it up for the sake of completing her studies. In fact, she should not obey her parents if they commanded her to take her Hijab off; there is no obedience to any human being in what constitutes disobedience of Allaah. Please refer to Fatwa 84942.
Based on that, you should wisely and kindly convince your parents with your opinion and keenly avoid incurring their anger and displeasure to the best of your ability.
If you really need to continue with your study and cannot find another school except this which bans the Hijab and mixed-sex schools that do not ban Hijab, then you should enroll in the latter (i.e. mixed-sex school) pursuant to the principle of committing the lesser of two evils. You are advised to strive in avoiding improper mixing with the opposite sex and keeping the company of righteous female friends.
We implore Allaah to guard you and preserve your religiosity. Verily, religion is the most valuable asset one can possess.
