Who was the man who converted from Islam to Christianity then died and was ejected by the earth?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
In a Hadeeth on the authority of Anas it was mentioned that a man from the tribe of Banu An-Najjaar embraced Islam, memorized Chapters Al-Baqarah and Aal-‘Imraan (chapters 2 and 3 of the Quran) and would transcribe for the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. However, later on he converted to Christianity and joined the People of the Book. He then died and when they buried him, they discovered the next morning that the earth had ejected him and had thrown him out onto its surface. They tried two more times to bury him, but the same thing happened again and so they left him unburied. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
We do not know the man’s name. All we know is that he was from Banu An-Najjaar and was one of the transcribers of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Ibn Hajar mentioned that he found no mention of his name.
