Question
What is the ruling of writing the name of Allaah and other Islamic quotings on Mugs, Cups etc???
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
The written Names of Allaah or the names of Prophets or something that is honored in the religion must be revered; Allaah says (what means): {That [is so]. And whoever honors the symbols of Allaah – indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.} [Quran 22:32] Allaah also says (what means): {That [has been commanded], and whoever honors the sacred ordinances of Allaah – it is best for him in the sight of his Lord.} [Quran 22: 30]
It is not permissible to expose any of these things to abuse or degradation; so some scholars stated that it is forbidden to write the Name of Allaah on walls so that it will not to be exposed to abuse.
The commentary of Ad-Dusooqi, from the Maaliki School of jurisprudence, about engraving verses of the Quran on tombs/graves reads: “This should be forbidden as this leads to degrading them – as the scholars said – and the same applies to engraving the Quran and the Names of Allaah on walls.” [End of quote]
Writing them on utensils, like mugs and cups, makes them more subject to abuse than writing them on walls.
