Checking underwear for discharges not required in case of doubt

Question

Assalaamu alaykum. I wanted to ask, if I fear a possible discharge of madhi (pre-seminal fluid), assuming I felt something in my private parts, am I required to check to make sure nothing came out? If people never check to make sure madhi came out or not, then how would they know?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is clear, dear brother, from your previous questions and current question that you are afflicted with severe waswasah (obsessive whisperings) in respect to impurity. This current question is nothing but a continuation of those whisperings, so we advise you to fear Allaah and not get carried away with them.

You are not obliged to check your clothes just because of doubt whether or not you released mathi (prostatic fluid) or else. It is a mercy from Allaah that He did not order us to check our clothes as to whether or not there is impurity in them. This would be exaggerating and opening the door for obsessive whisperings and overburdening oneself without any need. The scholars issued a fatwa that it is not permissible to do so as long as the matter did not reach the level of certainty or predominantly believing so.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen may Allaah have mercy upon him said:

"Some people think that something has come out of their penis, and the devil whispers to him that something has come out, so he checks his penis and squeezes its head and this is wrong. The solution to these two reasons is as follows: he should stop and not squeeze his penis. When he urinates and finishes urinating, he washes the top of his penis and that’s it. As regards the second matter which is doubting whether or not something came out of him, then the solution is what was confirmed from the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) that he was asked about a man who feels something in his stomach and doubts whether or not some wind came out of him, and the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said, 'He should not leave his prayer unless he hears a sound or notices a smell. This is an effective treatment, Allaah willing, because it is a prescription from the best of doctors who was the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ).'"
