salam. so far i know majority scholars think that parents are not obliged to provide for an adult son. now that i am 22 years old and still studying, shall i start earning on my own? its to be noted that my dad's income is mixed(halal and haram). shall i depend on him? in case i only get chances of earning that provide mixed income instead of halal, shall i take the chance or depend on my dad?
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
First of all, we should say that we have received many questions from you about your studies and work and other related questions, so we hope that you are not overcome by whispers about this.
Hence, we first advise you to fear Allah, and to stop asking so many questions and make room for others to ask their questions.
In response to your question, we say in brief that if you are able to work then your father does not have to spend on you, but you do not have to work as long as he spends on you.
Also, it is not forbidden for you to eat food he buys with his money so long as his money is mixed and it is not totally ill-gotten.
If your father refrains from spending on you, then he has the right to do so; in which case you are obliged to endeavor to earn your living so that you fulfil the obligation of spending on your own self.
Since you write to us in Arabic sometimes, then we refer you to some Fataawa regarding what we have mentioned to you.
You may refer to Fatwa 131622 in our Arabic site about spending on adult children, and to Fatwa 354379 wherein we referred to a Fatwa regarding benefiting from the father’s money that is mixed (lawful and ill-gotten).
Allah knows best.
