I am going to perform ‘Umrah, Allaah Willing, and I wear medical stockings without which I cannot stand for a long time. I know that it is not permissible to wear any stitched clothing or stockings. What is the ruling regarding the stockings that are worn from the bottom of the foot up to the knee?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Without doubt, medical stockings are a type of stitched clothing because it is tailored to fit the part of the body you have mentioned. The one who wears it in Ihraam is required to offer a Fidyah (i.e. compensation).
We notify the questioner that he has to take off these stockings whenever there is no need for them as long as he is in a state of Ihraam. This is because the one who does an action that is forbidden in a state of Ihraam without necessity is held sinful and is required to offer a Fidyah. But, if there is a necessity then he is not sinful but he is still required to offer a Fidyah.
