Methods of sorcerers and soothsayers in deceiving people

Question

I have a friend who wears a silver ring. Whenever he wants to know anything about himself or anyone of us, he puts this ring in the forefinger (that is raised while saying Tashahhud) of any person and then reads the Surah of Al-Qadr from the Noble Quran. Then he asks any question, for example, if so-and-so did such action raise the forefinger and if not, do not raise it. So, we see for real that the forefinger is raised high if this person did this action and vice versa. Could you explain this matter? What is the ruling of such ring and the one who wears it? To your knowledge, the owner of this ring offers the prayers at their due times and observes fast on Mondays and Thursdays regularly. May Allaah Reward you the best for your efforts.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

First of all, you have to know that no one knows the unseen except Allaah The Almighty. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {Say, "None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allaah, and they do not perceive when they will be resurrected.} [Quran 27:65]

Allaah The Almighty May Inform some of His Awliyaa’ (allies) of some matters of the unseen. However, that does not happen regularly nor does it happen upon a request from such a person. Actually, this Wali cannot claim that he knows the unseen for doing so is a form of disbelief. May Allaah The Almighty Guard us against it.

Among the characteristics of the Awliyaa’ are that they believe firmly in Allaah and fear Allaah much. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {Unquestionably, [for] the Allies of Allaah there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve. Those who believed and were fearing Allaah.} [Quran 10:62-63]

Whenever anyone deviates from the proper way of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and his honorable Sunnah, he will be far away from fearing Allaah The Almighty and will not be a Wali for Allaah The Almighty even if he adheres strictly to prayers and fasting Mondays and Thursdays regularly.

Consequently, what you mentioned concerning the ring and its owner, it is a kind of sorcery and soothsaying which the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, forbad us from in his Hadeeth: “Whoever goes to a soothsayer or a sorcerer and believes what he says has disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad.

So, if the one who goes to a soothsayer and believes what he says is included in this threat, then how about the one who does this and claims that he knows the Unseen?

Moreover, you have to know that reading the Surah of Al-Qadr on the ring does not change anything of the proved facts that we have mentioned. Sorcerers and soothsayers may read some verses of the Noble Quran while doing their sorcery only for the purpose of deceiving people.

Allaah Knows best.
